History of Spence Clarke & Co.

The firm was formed in Spain in 1985 by a major firm of UK based international audit and accountancy firms and was taken over by Alistair and Susan Spence Clarke in 1991.

Spence Clarke & Co has been throughout one of the very few tax and accountancy firms located in southern Spain authorised to practice by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales and has become one of the most significant independent accountancy firms in the Costa del Sol.

The Partners

Alistair Spence Clarke FCA: Alistair is a fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales and a member of the leading Spanish professional accountancy and tax organisations, the Instituto de Censores Jurados de Cuentas de España and the Asociacion Española de Asesores Fiscales. He is also a Spanish registered auditor and inscribed in ROAC, the Spanish auditors registration authority, and is also authorised to audit in various English speaking jurisdictions by virtue of his ICAEW qualifications.

With over 35 years of experience as a Chartered Accountant, half in public practice in Spain and previously as a partner of a major UK firm, he has a wealth of knowledge that is matched by few individuals in southern Spain. He is in charge of corporate and personal tax consultancy. Alistair arrived in Spain in 1989 to manage the office for the UK firm before he took it over with Susan Spence Clarke.

Susan Spence Clarke: Susan arrived in Spain in 1989 to set up an accountancy and business software company principally to market the products of a major UK software supplier. The company installed systems in Gibraltar and the rest of the Costa del Sol principally for professional practices, banks and company services business. Susan sold the company to a Spanish software supplier in 1991 when she decided to join forces with Alistair and take over the practice.

Susan is responsible for all the firm's non resident Spanish property owning clients and Spanish company property owners.

Michael Egan: Michael joined the firm in 1996 and over the years has become a key member of the firm's management structure. He became a partner in 2009 and now manages the firm's commercial and property investment clients. He has acquired a deep knowledge of the Spanish tax, accountancy and labour systems and provides clients with practical and imaginative advice on doing business in Spain.
