Spain’s Social Security Soars as Foreign Talent Hits New Milestone

Foreign Employees Surpass three million, Driving Spain’s Economic Growth and Workforce Diversity. July and August 2025 have marked significant milestones for Spain’s Social Security system, highlighting both the overall growth of the workforce and the critical contribution of foreign employees to the economy.

Record Growth in Social Security Affiliates

In July 2025, Spain’s Social Security system reached a historic high of 21,6 million affiliates, up nearly 475.623 from last year 2024. Growth is driven by both young employees under 30 and experienced workers over 55, reflecting successful youth employment initiatives and shifts in retirement policies. Key sectors contributing include services, construction, and manufacturing, with summer tourism boosting seasonal employment.

The Role of Foreign Employees: Normal and Self-Employed

Foreign employees have become increasingly significant in Spain’s labour market. As of August 2025, foreign affiliates in the Social Security system reached 3.047.089, a 6,9% increase over the past year. They now represent 14,05% of all Social Security affiliates, and over 40% of new jobs created since the labour reform have gone to foreign nationals. Among these employees, women account for 43,3% (around 1,33 million), and 83,9% are in the General Social Security Regime, mirroring patterns among native workers.

In addition to standard employment roles, foreign self-employees reached 487.601 in August 2025, reflecting a 6,5% rise over the previous year. Growth is particularly strong in high-value sectors such as Information & Communications and Professional, Scientific, and Technical Activities, showing that foreign nationals are increasingly creating businesses and working independently.

Gender Distribution and Employment Structure

  • Women represent 43.3% of foreign affiliates—around 1.33 million workers.
  • 83.9% of foreign employees are enrolled in the General Social Security Regime, closely mirroring the distribution of native Spanish workers.

Sectoral Presence and Employment Growth

Foreign employees contribute extensively across a wide range of industries. Their presence is particularly strong in: Hospitality – 30%, Extraterritorial Organizations – 28.7% , Agriculture – 24.5% , Construction – 22.2% , Administrative Activities – 17.7% , Transport and Storage – 17.1% , Real Estate – 14.7%

High value-added sectors such as Information & Communications (12.3%), Artistic Activities (11.8%), and Scientific and Technical Services (10%) also benefit from substantial foreign participation.

UK Nationals and Self-Employment Opportunities

Trends in foreign self-employment point to opportunities for British entrepreneurs. Growth in high-value sectors is particularly encouraging for UK professionals, including digital nomads, consultants, and tech specialists. UK nationals considering self-employment in Spain should be aware of regulatory requirements, including obtaining a NIE, tax registration, and Social Security registration.
