Celebrating 40 Years of SUR in English

by

The Partners of Spence Clarke had the honour to be invited to the 40th anniversary celebrations of SUR in English commenced with a spectacular gala at the Hotel Don Pepe Gran Meliá in Marbella on 7 October, attended by over 200 guests, including representatives from local authorities and businesses. The event, sponsored by several local councils and organizations, emphasised the newspaper’s legacy as a pioneering English-language publication in Spain.

The founding partners of Spence Clarke, Susan Spence Clarke and Alistair Spence Clarke, were among those present, joined by partners Alicia Jimenez, Claudia Vargas Puccio, and Miguel Ángel Blanca. They thoroughly enjoyed the celebration, reflecting on the shared history between SUR in English and Spence Clarke. Both organizations were founded in the same era, faced similar challenges, and have a common mission of assisting foreigners in Spain. As Spence Clarke prepares to celebrate its own 40th anniversary next year, they found a strong connection in the experiences and achievements highlighted during the evening.

The evening featured important speeches from SUR in English editors and former staff, who highlighted the paper’s significant role in connecting communities along the Costa del Sol. Special recognition was given to four organizations—Mijas Foreign Residents Department, Panorama Real Estate, the Malaga English Cemetery Foundation, and the British Chamber of Commerce in Spain—for their dedicated efforts in building international communities.

The gala concluded with a delightful cocktail reception, providing guests with an opportunity to socialize and further strengthen connections within the community.
